Inovação e Engenharia em Biotecnologia, S.A. (BIOTREND) is a research-based SME focused on the development, optimization, de-risking and scale-up of bioprocesses for industrial biotechnology. Clients range from start-up companies without bioprocessing know-how and infrastructure to large chemical and pulp and paper companies exploring the opportunities of industrial biotechnology and of the use of renewable raw materials, including industrial by-products, to create value. Additionally, Biotrend invests in internal projects to create its own IP portfolio. Biotrend carries out research aiming at the production of bio-based chemicals and materials from renewable raw materials. Further, contribute to collaborative projects in the fields of the bioeconomy. The core activity of Biotrend is the development of novel bioprocesses and their transition from lab scale to bioprocesses that can be implemented in production scale, process integration and early evaluation of the technical and economical feasibility of processes before investment in higher scale trials are performed. We are experienced in the development of processes based on a wide range of biological systems, from naturally occurring bacterial strains and yeasts to recombinant microbial cells, for the production of biomass, primary and secondary metabolites, recombinant proteins and biopolymers, including polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). We also have experience in working with a wide diversity of raw materials, including lignocellulosic hydrolysates, spent sulfite liquor, kraft process side streams and residues from the food industry. In the last five years, Biotrend has been involved in the development of processes for the production of PHA and has developed scalable processes for the purification of PHA from biomass produced from from diverse industrially sourced raw materials. This experience and the processes developed by Biotrend will be the basis of the main contribution of Biotrend to the project, namely in task Task 2.4 PHA Extraction, in which PHA grades with different purities will be produced.

Dr. Bruno Sommer Ferreira: CEO, MSc Chemical Engineering and PhD Biotechnology (Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal). Responsible for the company strategy and management. 20 years experience in the development, optimization, monitoring and control of bioprocesses in biological systems as diverse as microalgae, bacteria, yeasts and animal cells. Before founding Biotrend, has performed research at the Technical University of Lisbon, at the National Laboratories for Industrial Technology, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany and at the University of Toronto, Canada. Consultant for private and governmental organizations national and international, in theme of industrial biotechnology and the bioeconomy. Author of more than 30 scientific publications, including two patents. Has been Principal Investigator in various EU projects concerning PHA production from industrial wastes or by-products and has supervised the development PHA production processes for corporate clients.
Dr. João Cavalheiro: Pilot plant manager, MSc Biological Eng. and PhD Biotechnology (Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal). Has performed research at Novartis (Switzerland) and ITQB from Universidade Nova in Lisbon. Has 15 years experience in bioprocess engineering and authors 5 scientific publications. Oversees the scale-up experiments and the development of downstream processes. The topic of his PhD was on the production of PHAs from wastes of the biodiesel industry. Has lead the development of PHA purification processes at Biotrend in the last 4 years.
Ms. Ana Carolas: Lab leader, MSc Biological Engineering (Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal). Before joining Biotrend she gathered research experience at the Technical University of Lisbon and at Nizo Food Research (The Netherlands). Has more than 10 years experience in preparing and running fermentations and oversees all lab-scale fermentation trials at Biotrend, with more than 600 fermentation runs carried out including more than 50 fermentation trials for the production of PHAs, both for EU projects and for clients.
Dr. Marina Pires: Analytical Manager, BSc Industrial Chemistry and MSc Chemistry, Industrial and Chemical Processes (Universidade de Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal), PhD Chemistry (Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal). Author of 6 publications in international refereed journals. Leader of organic chemistry activities. Development of chemical processes, and implementation of analytical techniques.
