University of Verona (UNIVR)
The University of Verona is a public institution enrolling approximately 23,000 students in life sciences, computer science and socio-economic sciences and humanities and hosts 1,500 teaching and administrative/technical staff. The institution was founded in the Fifties and in 1982 it was established as autonomous State University. According to the prestigious business Italian journal “Il Sole 24 Ore”, in 2015 the University of Verona was ranked 1 st in Italy for the quality of the research and teaching. The University of Verona has participated in more than 70 FP7 and H2020 projects. The institution is organized into 15 departments (Biotechnology; Business Administration; Computer Science; Economics; Foreign Languages and Literatures; Law; Life and Reproduction Sciences; Medicine; Neurological and Movement Sciences; Pathology and Diagnostics; Philology, Literature, and Linguistics; Philosophy, Education and Psychology; Public Health and Community Medicine; Surgery; Time, Space, Image, Society) and, in addition, the school of Medicine and Surgery, offering a total of 56 degree courses, 14 PhD courses, 41 specialization schools and several post-degree and master courses.
The University of Verona will participate to the project through its Department of Biotechnology. In particular, the group of Environmental Chemical Engineering will be active in the project in particular in two main WPs: WP2 – Technical challenges, in particualr in task 2.1 dedicated to the acidogenic fermentation and WP4 – Regulatory challenges, where the group will ba leader. Minor efforts are foreseen for WPs 5, 6, and 7. The group has a vast experience in EU funded projects and participated to some 10 EU projects in FP7 and H2020 and in one case operated also as project coordinator.

Prof David BOLZONELLA is an expert in the field of anaerobic processes for the treatment of organic residues/waste for the production of methane, hydrogen and biobased products. He published more than 70 papers, cited more than 1400 times for a corresponding H index of 24. He participated to several EU funded projects in different funding schemes: 6th and 7th FrameProgram, LIFE+ ENVIRONMENT, Intelligent Energy Europe, Horizon2020. He is member of the Scientific Board of the Italian Biogas Association. Because of these activities he is in touch with several Companies in the field of environmental technologies and waste/wastewater management.
Prof Franco CECCHI is full professor in chemical engineering and senior expert in the fields of organic waste management. He published more than 120 papers, cited more than 3000 times for a corresponding H index of 33. . He participated to several EU funded projects in different funding schemes: 6th and 7th FrameProgram, LIFE+ ENVIRONEMNT, Intelligent Energy Europe, Horizon2020.
Prof Eng Francesco FATONE is an environmental engineer and associate professor of Chemical Engineering (H-index = 17; total IF=168.01; Citations > 700). His field of expertize is related to the circular management and resource recovery from waste and wastewater. He has published 60 peer-reviewed SCI papers in international journals, 2 national patents, more than 100 conference proceedings. Francesco is currently coordinator and/or principal investigator of n.3 Horizon2020 projects, n.1 Life+, n.1 Water JPI, corresponding to overall EC budget > 2.5 million euros. Even within these international projects Francesco is networked dozens of small, medium and large companies dealing with environmental protection and technologies. Francesco is co-chair of the second largest IWA specialist group, editor of international SCI journals, chair or member of the scientific committees of IWA conferences, member of the executive board of the scientific committee of ECOMONDO, the largest exhibition on environmental technologies in the Med basin.
