Agua do Tejo Atlantico (AdTA)
Águas do Tejo Atlântico is a leading company operating in the environmental sector in Portugal and its mission is to contribute to the pursuit of national objectives in the wastewater collection and treatment within a framework pf economic, financial, technical, social and environmental sustainability.
Águas do Tejo Atlântico has the responsibility to manage and operate the wastewater multi-municipality system of the Great Lisbon and West, guaranteeing the quality, continuity and efficiency of the water public services, in order to protect the public health, populations’ welfare, the accessibility to the public services, the environmental protection and economic and financial sustainability of the sector, in a framework of equity and tariff stability, contributing also to the regional development and planning.
Águas do Tejo Atlântico exploits now a system that includes 104 WWTP, 292 pumping stations and 922 km of main sewage system, and treats around 244 Mm3/yr, serving a population of 2,4 million inhabitants (served 23 municipalities: Alcobaça, Alenquer, Amadora, Arruda dos Vinhos, Azambuja, Bombarral, Cadaval, Caldas da Rainha, Cascais, Lisboa, Loures, Lourinhã, Mafra, Nazaré, Óbidos, Odivelas, Oeiras, Peniche, Rio Maior, Sintra, Sobral de Monte Agraço, Torres Vedras e Vila Franca de Xira) and a covered area of 4.145 km2.
Águas do Tejo Atlântico develops R&D activities in partnership with other institutions, companies and universities in a wide range of subjects, including novel treatment processes and implementation of management and simulation tools for optimizing wastewater treatment and collection. R&D activities include participation in several national as well as in European projects and international awards recognition, by International Water Association (IWA) with a Global Honour Award for the project “AQUASAFE” developed in partnership with an European SME, which is related to operational platform for decision support systems in Lisbon sewage system.

Pedro Álvaro, BSc in Environmental Engineering by the “Universidade Nova de Lisboa” (Portugal) in 20011999. He is the Operation Manager of Águas do Tejo Atlântico – 104 WWTP and 292 pumping stations. He holds a key knowledge for the project implementation and extrapolation other sewage systems.
Marcos Batista, Development and Communication Director at Águas do Tejo Atlântico. His expertise area is in communication. He will act as the principal vehicale for the disseminations activities.
Rita Alves, received her BSc in Environmental Engineering Sanitary Field by the “Universidade Nova de Lisboa” (Portugal) in 2000. She is PhD candidate in Instituto Superior Técnico, Department of environmental Engineering, and thesis topic “Energy efficiency in wastewater treatment systems. She is the R&D manager of Águas do Tejo Atlântico. She is a multitasking team member that provides support for R&D project management, data mining activities, among other activities. She will act as the day-to-day manager of the project and ensure the timely implementation of the AdTA tasks and deliverables. Her recent work focusses in activities that promotes knowledge transfer, monitoring R&D projects and formulate R&D proposals.
